Behind The Music: Overclap
Kicking off our second release of 2024, Overclap's latest masterpiece is a one-track wonder titled 'Tell Me Why'. This single is a deep dive into the essence of Melodic Techno, showcasing Overclap's relentless pursuit of innovative and captivating sounds.
Could you shed some light on the creative spark behind 'Tell Me Why' and the specific vision or message you aimed to convey through this track?
"Tell Me Why" was a song that deeply involved me during the production process. I sought to create something unique, incorporating a vocal that told a rich and deep narrative. When developing the melodies, I sought to guide them according to the story, providing an immersive sensory experience.
My goal was to go beyond the conventional, intensely exploring the senses and feelings. I wanted music to serve as a vehicle for reflection, stimulating a deep emotional connection with those who listen to it. Each element of the composition has been carefully chosen to create an atmosphere that is not only heard, but felt in a meaningful way.
What are the key elements or practices that kickstart your artistic journey? Do you have certain methods or rituals that help you begin a new musical endeavor?
I have a special appreciation for outlining a unique idea, whether in the choice of vocals, the construction of the melody or any aspect that I have not yet explored. Diversity is something that motivates me, and I constantly seek to merge styles and concepts in innovative ways. I believe that true artistic expression lies in the ability to experiment, reinvent and constantly challenge pre-established boundaries. This approach allows me to create works that are truly distinctive and that reflect my constant search for new forms of musical expression.
Which artists or genres have been instrumental in influencing the development of your musical style?
I'm quite an eclectic person when it comes to music, enjoying a variety of styles such as rock, trap and electronica. My musical inspiration spans a wide range of artists and bands, including iconic names like Metallica, Eminem and Armin van Buuren, among many others. My list of influences is extensive and diverse, reflecting my passion for exploring different sounds and styles.
What is your preferred Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) for creating music, and what considerations influenced your decision to select this particular software?
Currently, I use Studio One and Ableton. The reason why I have an affinity with these software lies in the similarity of their concepts, although they present some notable distinctions, especially in relation to their native plugins. Furthermore, I highlight the practicality of these platforms, as they are truly versatile in several areas, considerably facilitating the music construction processes. This combination of conceptual similarity and practical efficiency contributes significantly to the agility and fluidity in the development of my compositions.
Every producer has a few key tools in their toolkit. Could you reveal a VST plugin that you find essential in your production process? How does it play a role in defining and refining your signature sound?
I don't have a specific plugin for creation, however, I have a special preference for Serum and Diva. Both give me an extensive range of options for precisely modulating and sculpting tones. Despite this, I also incorporate other plugins into my creative process.
I believe that the refinement and polish of the sound vary according to the processes that each producer establishes for their work. Each tool allows for greater customization and adaptability to the specific style and artistic vision of each project.
From the wide array of tracks released by Sync Forward, is there one that particularly speaks to you? What aspects of this track create a personal resonance for you?
Among countless notable tracks and artists from the label, Remotion's "Neptune" and "Danger" stand out as my favorites. Remotion presents a unique style, combining serious sound with melodic elements, providing an immersive musical experience. These tracks in particular exude an intense tension, making them truly memorable for me.
It is interesting to note that, although these are the most highlighted, there are several other equally notable tracks that I could mention. The diversity and quality of the label's repertoire certainly contributes to my appreciation of several exceptional productions.
